Postcard from the Republican National Convention
Posted: Sunday, August 31, 2008
Greetings all,
It's
been a long and eventful day one for the 2008 Republican National
Convention. My day started early with a few phone calls from
people in Scott County expressing their thanks and congratulations for
representing our area at this
year's convention. The calls were prompted
by Jeff Kerr's story in the Sunday News-Graphic.
I
did read the story about another local
person attending the Democrat National Convention and found his
quote about "..we saw Stevie Wonder, Sheryl Crow and
Michael McDonald, but everyone knew who the real star
was..." quite interesting. It got me to
thinking about what this race is all about, experience verses
celebrity. Frankly when the phone rings in the White House
at 3 a.m. I want someone who has the experience verses a person
who some think is bigger than Stevie Wonder or Sheryl Crow!
As
many of you know Monday's session has been considerably
revamped. There is only an afternoon business session
that ends at 5 p.m. and there were be no speeches from President Bush,
First Lady Laura Bush or Senator McConnell. While the
task of nominating John McCain will go on we must be mindful of
those who are leaving New Orleans and other areas along the
Gulf Coast now in the path of Hurricane Gustav. It was
on the minds of delegates from Kentucky and other states,
openly being discussed during the opening reception at the
Minneapolis Convention Center. The thoughts and
prayers of all of us in Minneapolis go out to those along the Gulf
Coast and we are hopeful that no lives are lost to the storm.
The
mood here is reserved but mindful on the task at hand. At this
point the leadership of the Republican Party is approaching the
activies of the convention on a day-by-day basis, following the lead of
our candidate John McCain. The nomination of he and Gov. Sarah
Palin will come soon enough, but our attention and our thoughts are
focused elsewhere.
Sincerely,
Michael Goins
